I'm not sure how much you guys know about The World Ends With You, but the entire cast of characters are all dead and are either playing a game to regain their life (the Players) or have already been through the game and opted to stay on as game staff instead of returning to life (the Reapers). Joshua is the one in charge of the game and the antagonist that set everything in the canon in motion, so he's already dead by the time the canon starts, but like the rest of the Reapers we have no idea when or how he died. There is a version of death for Players and Reapers called Erasure, but he's not Erased at any point in canon (though there's a fake-out at one point where it looks like he is, and you don't find out otherwise until almost the end of the game).
I mostly just wasn't sure how it would work if he were already dead and there was no canon "death" point!
