Medical Ward/Infirmary Guidelines

Overall, please keep in mind that the Direct Care Wardens are competent medical professionals, and that other Infirmary Wardens have some measure of relevant training. These characters' players shouldn't be expected to comb their reading lists for posts or comments that are medically significant.

You may assume that:
  • Visitors to the Infirmary will receive appropriate treatment in a timely fashion for their injuries and ailments, and will receive appropriate treatment if they choose to spend their Death Toll recovery time in the Infirmary.
  • Medical details known to Infirmary staff (e.g. allergies, histories of addiction etc.) will be respected during any course of treatment.
  • There is always someone in the Infirmary and always someone available to come to the patient in case of an emergency.
  • When there are magic users working in the Infirmary, magical treatments are available but will never be the only option on offer.
  • Inmates will be expected to take all prescribed medication in the Infirmary, in view of an Infirmary Warden, to prevent hoarding.  Exceptions exist, for example if a character needs an asthma inhaler on them at all times.
Generally speaking, Inmates shouldn't need permission from their Warden for any medical treatment or procedure - a person's health is the concern of themselves and their physician. The only exception is when a treatment may pose a major threat to the patient or the Barge population in general (e.g. major elective surgery, magical healing not guaranteed to work as expected on a particular character's biology, prescription of psychoactive drugs etc).

Please don't assume that:
  • Anyone will be able to steal drugs or medical equipment without prior agreement of the relevant player(s).
  • Anyone will be able to get a job in the Infirmary without IC discussion with at least one Direct Care Warden, or OOC discussion with their player(s).
  • Anything more serious/disruptive than a heated argument can go down in the Infirmary without being noticed and dealt with.
  • IC requests for any sort of medical assistance not being responded to means that they have been ICly ignored. TLV is a fast-paced game; sometimes things get lost in the rush.
  • Infirmary staff players know anything about medicine or medical ethics, or should be expected to do your Googling for you. Either handwave the specifics or provide the players with the information they'll need; don't saddle a character with IC accusations of incompetence because of an innocent mistake on the player's part.
For any plots outside these guidelines, or if you think anything in the assumed list might not apply for whatever reason, we recommend you directly contact the relevant players (particularly characters listed as Direct Care on the Jobs Page, and anyone else you feel should be aware) as far ahead of time as possible and wait for a response from all players concerned. If (after trying several methods of contact) you get no response and you need an answer, get in touch with the mods. Please don't assume that no response means no objection. Going ahead on the basis that 'if they notice it and don't like it they'll say something' is not okay. As with all plots impacting on someone else's character(s), it is your responsibility to get permission beforehand.

We're not trying to spoil anyone's fun here! But please keep in mind that the Infirmary staff are not NPCs, it isn't fair to make assumptions about their behavior and what they will or won't notice, and things that happen on their turf need to happen with their players' permission. This isn't a 'no shenanigans' rule; it's a reminder that everyone involved needs to be fully aware of the shenanigans in advance and willing for them to go ahead. It only takes two minutes to shoot someone a PM or email! The same is true of all other areas that are under supervision.

Making any assumptions outside the guidelines above, without permission, will be considered godmodding - which has always been against the rules. We will expect that any plots or posts depending on such assumptions be reworked or retconned so this is no longer the case.
