TLV - Fourth Wall Permissions

FOURTH WALL PERMISSIONS

What is Fourth Walling?
Having characters from so many universes, it's hard to determine which pop culture references are acceptable, and which are not. For example, everybody knows Star Wars. It's a pretty famous series, endlessly quotable, with a lovable cast of characters. But once these characters cease to become fictions for others in the game, we can run into problems. How much can you, John Smith, know about Luke Skywalker? What is acceptable to tell him (or to even know about him), and what isn't? Some characters are avid pop culture nuts, and it would be helpful to let them know what they can and can't know about your character-- if anything at all!

While we expect there to be 4th Walling for characters of certain series, please be respectful of other players' wishes.

[identity profile] impure-tale.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: The Marquis de Sade
Series: Quills
Fourth Wall?: Sure!
Restrictions: Before you fourth wall him in a historical context (origin of the word sadism, etc), be certain that you have read his history (http://impure-tale.livejournal.com/513.html), because if your character walks in with the basic historical assumptions and you intended for them to look knowledgeable, you're going to look really, REALLY stupid. I'm not joking. And he gets kinda pissed off about that. If you intended to get it wrong, kudos to you.

If you're fourth walling information from the movie, however, your character needs to have seen the movie.

I'm also totally cool with anybody going "...Geoffrey Rush?" or "I loved you in Shine!"
Additional Notes: Nada.

[personal profile] acid_rayne 2008-08-16 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Q
Series: 'Star Trek'
Fourth Wall?: Absolutely!
Restrictions: None, so long as you stay true to the show - which includes realising that certain things portrayed as ambiguous, may or may not have taken place. :) I'm not a massively huge fan of the franchise, but who hasn't seen at least a few episodes, every now and then? I haven't read any of the books or anything, however and I understand they're not canon, in any case.
Additional Notes: Tends to perceive such things as 'multiversal causalities' and the like. Look up what the definition of 'tulpa' is and that's how the character would mostly view it. :)

Character Name: Aleera
Series: 'Van Helsing'
Fourth Wall?: Yes.
Restrictions: You can describe the conclusion, but she's too proud to believe the apparently-defenceless Anna could have actually dispatched her. :) How likely is it that your character would not only have watched 'Van Helsing', but remember her specific character?
Additional Notes: The character happens to come from a time and culture which effectively existed before television and so would have no idea what a film is, much less that there was a loose adaptation of a computer game. Any attempt to fourth wall her, if giving enough evidence to back it up, shall very likely be met with accusations of witchery and the like. Also, remember that her journal is likely to be ink and paper, rather than computer system.

Character Name: Rayne
Series: 'Bloodrayne'
Fourth Wall?: Certainly!
Restrictions: None, really. She's from the end of the second game and partially based on what was apparently planned for a third.
Additional Notes: She's actually dreading/expecting it, based on who has been met, so far. Rayne, however, appears to use a lot of popular culture references, especially as nicknames. Don't be surprised if she may or may not know your own character.

[identity profile] buywithme.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name:Prefect
Series: "The Factory"
Fourth Wall?: Haha, If your character's into avant guarde dance then go nuts! Alternatively because there's no strict definition of what world he's from originally, so characters from other worlds who want to be aware of the Factories existence are fine too! As long as it's vaguely realistic in canon for your character to be aware of him either from the play or from infamy feel free!
Restrictions:As said above, realism.
Additional Notes:none :D

[identity profile] tadwizard.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Tony Foster
Series: Blood and Smoke series'
Fourth Wall?: Yep
Restrictions: Only if it's reasonable that your character would have read the books
Additional Notes:

[identity profile] some-kinda-hero.livejournal.com 2008-10-25 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Claire Bennet.
Series: Heroes.
Fourth Wall?: I prefer not (canon-puncturing makes Claire sad), but if the plot is wicked enough, then I am approachable on the subject. So, please to be asking before you do anything. However, you are welcome to recognise her name as she was in the newspaper and part of a school murder.
Restrictions: I just don't want her to know she is fictional.
Additional Notes: I am addicted to cosplaying. Which has nothing to do with this game, XD!

ext_956366: Malcolm Jamieson as Armand in the Scarlet Pimpernel wearing waistcoat and cravat nodding his head and closed eyes (bow) (wedding smiles (soft focus))

[identity profile] young-idealist.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Armand St. Just
Series: The Scarlet Pimpernel (and sequels) by Baroness Orczy
Fourth Wall?: short answer=yes, it's okay
Restrictions: Just this basically: if it's reasonable for your character to recognize him (see below), go right ahead but don't outright say, "Oi, you're fictional!" If the books end up in the Library, he'll figure it out eventually himself because of Orczy's horrible gaffe with his age, but if you recognize him, he'll just assume there's some historical information (or even fictional adaptations) running around in the modern world about Percy and the League. I'd like him to think that as long as possible.
Additional Notes:Please keep the following in mind. There are references to the Scarlet Pimpernel or the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel in other media and stories. The only big ones that come to my mind at the moment are Daffy Duck's The Scarlet Pumpernickel, Blackadder the Third's "Nob and Nobility" and the Blakeneys are included in a portrait in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, I believe. And even though Wikipedia won't let people say it, the Pimpernel was the forerunner to all the secret-identity type superheroes. Zorro was blatantly the same story transferred to Spanish colonial California, and Bruce Wayne/Batman as a rich man righting wrongs are the most obvious.

The original book is often assigned as high school reading. Probably only a real bibliophile, someone who lived through the era they were originally published, or a hardcore fan will have read Eldorado. If your character encountered it during school, then they would likely know very little about Armand, and would mistakenly expect him to be nearly a decade older than he is. Certainly, only his name would ring a faint bell of recognition as Marguerite's brother. A few from the later 20th century and beyond may also know the musical, which bore little resemblance to the main plot, but featured Armand as a young, naive member of the League whose arrest spurs Marguerite into spying for Chauvelin, etc.

As for appearances, Armand does look remarkably like Malcolm Jamieson (as I chose him for the icons), except for a few obvious differences -- I think he's shorter by an inch or so (can't find Jamieson's actual height but he's not that much shorter than Anthony Andrews), much younger, has blue-gray eyes not dark, and does have the scar on his forehead that he earned late in Eldorado, which Jamieson does not, even later in the film because the crisis is resolved differently. Jamieson is not a famous enough actor for it to be likely Armand would be mistaken for him or any of the other characters he's played. (More details here (http://damned.wetpaint.com/page/The+Scarlet+Pimpernel), if you really want. It's a wiki entry I made for another game but details most media references to Armand and places to find the books to read.)

[identity profile] doctor-scarf.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: The Fourth Doctor
Series: Doctor Who
Fourth Wall?: Go for it!
Restrictions: If your character has seen Doctor Who or would know about the classic series, that is.
Additional Notes: He'll just go 'alternate dimensions!' if the fourth wall is thrown at him. <3
yourunichase: (hell)

[personal profile] yourunichase 2009-08-04 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Miss Parker
Series: The Pretender
Fourth Wall?: No, but maybe that'll change, given plot ideas. I'm flexible.
Restrictions:
Additional Notes: The Pretender is a show that ran in the mid 90s, so I'm not sure who would have seen it.

[identity profile] gotgreenmagic.livejournal.com 2009-08-20 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Shego
Series: Kim Possible
Fourth Wall?: Go for it, if it's likely that your character would have watched an early-21st-century cartoon. :p
Restrictions: Nahh.
Additional Notes: Shego's all about the weird stuff, she can deal.
toldastory: (Grin)

[personal profile] toldastory 2009-08-29 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Martha Jones
Series: Doctor Who
Fourth Wall?: Smash it
Restrictions: None
Additional Notes: She's just assume it's timey-whimey alternate world stuff.

[identity profile] inhumandog.livejournal.com 2009-09-05 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Iago
Series: Othello
Fourth Wall?: Go ahead
Restrictions: Nah
Additional Notes: Nah
mightymorbid: (Default)

[personal profile] mightymorbid 2009-09-06 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Mozenrath
Series: Aladdin
Fourth Wall?: Yes, but in a limited capacity.
Restrictions: Ask me before you do it.
Additional Notes:
with_discipline: (M; Dangerous even behind closed doors)

[personal profile] with_discipline 2009-09-17 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: T'Pol
Series: Star Trek: Enterprise
Fourth Wall?: Yes
Restrictions: I'd prefer the fourth wall to go within the Star Trek fandom; her series takes place before all the rest, so she's basically their history. But I'm not averse to real fourth wall; just keep in mind that Enterprise was probably the least popular Trek. :[
Additional Notes: <3
una_persson: (the entropy tango)

[personal profile] una_persson 2009-10-04 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Una Persson
Series: Michael Moorcock's Multiverse
Fourth Wall?: Go for it. Una will assume that you have read one of the books that her friend Mr Moorcock has written based on her memoirs, and even if you think she's fictional, she'll simply shrug; in the Multiverse, all things are possible and what is fictional in one reality is quite real to the inhabitants of another.
Restrictions: None
Additional Notes: If you would like a character to have encountered Mrs P before (in their home universe, in hers, in something else altogether), I'm open to it; the lady gets around like whoa, after all. Just let me know in advance and we'll work something out.

ETA: And also, feel free to find one of Moorcock's books in the library.

requiresssacrifice: (RETREEEAAAT!)

[personal profile] requiresssacrifice 2009-11-25 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Cobra Commander
Series: G. I. Joe MOVIE
Fourth Wall?: YUP-- for the cartoon/comics
Restrictions: No character should know any movie details. So, like, his movieverse name and backstory? No.
Additional Notes: Please don't metagame your character into somehow "knowing" this is Cobra Commander unless he says something like, ohhh, DESTRO AND THE BARONESS, or JOOOESSS!!!, or I AM COBRA COMMANDERRRR. Because seriously, he doesn't resemble the Cobra Commander that any of your characters would know and love.

[identity profile] brokenweapon.livejournal.com 2009-12-16 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: David Webb Jason Bourne
Series: The Bourne Series (film)
Fourth Wall?: I'd rather you didn't.
Restrictions: You can talk to me first about it - I'm open to ideas - but just don't come barreling out of nowhere being all LOL HI JASON HOW'S THE AMNESIA because he might actually, um, kill your character, since he views the Barge as a hiding place if not a fresh start entirely. But yeah, we can make it part of the plot somewhere down the line. It's just he's probably not going to take too kindly to it.
Additional Notes: Your character can mistake him for Matt Damon, though. For the lulz.

[identity profile] future-games.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Isaac Mendez
Series: Heroes
Fourth Wall?: It'd probably break the poor guy's brain, so I'd really prefer nothing more than knowing who he is as a painter/comic book artist.
Restrictions: Don't let him know he's fictional kthx
Additional Notes: For any Merlin muses that might come through here, mistaking him for Lancelot is perfectly cool as well. ;D
peektuttut: (Default)

[personal profile] peektuttut 2010-01-17 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Tim Drake
Series: DC Comics
Fourth Wall?: Yes/no. It's dependent.
Restrictions: I'm a little leery, because the whole identity thing is big for Tim. SO case by case basis? I guess? Unless you're characters' a huge comic nerd, then go for it.
Additional Notes: --
darknessb4me: (OOC - videro games)

[personal profile] darknessb4me 2010-02-13 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Arthas Menethil
Series: Warcraft
Fourth Wall?: Do it. Make comments about being killed by video game nerds living in their parents' basements, recognize his voice actor [Justin Gross, who hasn't really been in much], whatever you can think of
Restrictions: IF IT IS FUNNY, DO IT
Additional Notes: EDIT! Arthas is fine to fourth-wall, but check with his canonmates' permissions also, some of them might not appreciate being canon-punctured :x
Edited 2011-08-25 11:35 (UTC)
cisskabob: (Cissie says 'um?')

[personal profile] cisskabob 2010-02-22 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Cissie King-Jones
Series: DC Comics
Fourth Wall?: Sure!
Restrictions: None
Additional Notes: Well, Cissie really only appeared in Young Justice, which ran from 1998-2003. It's not exactly the most well-known comic, and she is kind of obscure--especially now that she's been in limbo for so many years. :( But if your character is the kind of person who would know of her, have at it! She's used to being recognized as an Olympian and actress, so that won't faze her, but knowing about Arrowette would.

[identity profile] grand-lotus.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Iroh
Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Fourth Wall?: Yeeeah why not.
Restrictions: Nah.
Additional Notes: I don't even think any of the current cohort will have seen Avatar. :(

[identity profile] bybloodandhonor.livejournal.com 2010-04-10 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Tirion Fordring
Series: Warcraft
Fourth Wall?: Honestly? Go for it. Even comments about paladins being OP. /o/ He'll just be confused and might think you're crazy.
Restrictions: None! Well, maybe run by stuff me regarding his family first?
Additional Notes:
I'm a little pally short and stout
Here is my hammer
Here is my mount
When I get all beat up here me shout
POP my bubble and hearthstone out.

[identity profile] doctor-j-crane.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Jonathan "Scarecrow" Crane
Series: Batman (Nolan-verse, mostly)
Fourth Wall?: Sure.
Restrictions: Go wild. All Batman canon, everything Cillian Murphy has ever been in. If the character will have seen/read it, it’s all groovy. I don’t have a problem with references to his past presence on the barge either.
Additional Notes: Jonathan won’t believe a word of it. Everyone else is just having hallucinations as bizarre as his.

[identity profile] puzzleprince.livejournal.com 2010-05-05 05:39 am (UTC)(link)

Additional Notes: Nope.

Fourth Wall?: Sure.
Restrictions: Ask if you're not sure about something.
Additional Notes: Nada.
