TLV - Potential Application Discussion
Dec. 28th, 2011 08:04 pmThinking about applying for a character, but not quite sure if they're a good fit? This post is dedicated to discussion of that very thing! A jury of your peers will help you in deciding whether or not a character you suddenly have a hankering for would be a fit for the Barge!
THIS IS NOT COMPULSORY. Nobody HAS to participate, and nobody HAS to post here before they post an application! This is just for people who are unsure and would like to have a discussion before they apply.
Please take the following into consideration when posting or replying here:
1. Mods are the final decision makers. Even if you get great feedback, player approval does not substitute mod approval. Even if a mod replies to your comment here telling you that they'd love to see the character and to go ahead and app, they're not making a promise to auto-approve your app once it's submitted.
2. This post is for constructive discussion. Even if your gut reaction is a simple "OMG YES" or "HELL NO", providing details and reasons for that reaction will always be more helpful to the player. In addition, please remain polite and civil at all times. Even if you take issue with a prospective character or the direction the player wants to take them in, flaming, insults, etc. will not be tolerated.
3. Avoid too much pre-plotting. Remember that this is all still theoretical, and the characters posted here haven't been apped or accepted into the game yet.
4. Don't take this personally. If people have concerns about the suitability of your character, or are unsure about some aspect of your comment (ex. the warden/inmate justification), it's not an attack on you or your RPing.
Put the character's name as the subject line (ONE CHARACTER PER COMMENT), and be sure to fill out the following form. Please do try to hit on all the points asked about here - this is all stuff we'd like you to keep in mind before you apply, and going into at least some level of detail will help spark meaningful discussion.
The Final Fantasy VII Compilation cast is at cap, and FFVII Compilation apps are currently closed. Discussing FFVII Compilation characters here is still welcome!

Please read all rules and guidelines before submitting an application. Be sure to check the Taken Characters list and the Retired Characters list before posting an application here.
NOTES:
- After applying for a character, we ask that players allow 30 days before bringing their next character into the game. In some cases (warden or cast caps, upcoming major game events) players may approach the mod team and clear submitting an application a few days early, though it will not be approved before the 30 day mark.
- If you are applying into an existing cast, please be aware that we may speak to players of characters close to (any version of) the character, and will speak to the players of canonmates of the character for which you are applying. We reserve the right to reject an application if it would render a current character or characters unplayable in the opinion of their player(s). If your app is rejected for this reason, we ask that you respect the decision.
- Both samples may be taken from threads on the Test Drive Meme, as long as they are recent and match your application with respect to canonpoint and warden/inmate status. The TDM goes up once per month and is always marked on the Event Calendar. If you would prefer to write yours out and would like some inspiration, check out the Flood Event tag on the OOC community; you're welcome to write a sample based on your character's reaction after one of these events! Here are a few popular choices.
- Canons (or canonpoints, in the case of ongoing series) must have been out for at least 30 days before they can be applied for.
- If you're reapping a character that you previously dropped and you plan to have them retain their memories of their previous stint onboard, please include at least a few sentences discussing how their previous stay affected them, and noting any relevant changes to their personality, worldview, and motivations. The more significant the changes, the more detail we'd like.

UPDATE: Barge Changes
May. 4th, 2009 07:35 pmHere’s the finalized list of changes that are going to be implemented into the Barge, starting 5/5/09! It’s a lot of repetition from the first post, but there are some clarifications here that you should bear in mind (regarding such things as the showers, which seems to be an endless case of confusion). The rules, FAQ, and previous informational posts will soon be updated reflecting these changes, but as of now, consider them official and in play.
Thinking about applying for a character, but not quite sure if they're a good fit? This post is dedicated to discussion of that very thing! A jury of your peers will help you in deciding whether or not a character you suddenly have a hankering for would be a fit for the Barge!
THIS IS NOT COMPULSORY. Nobody HAS to participate, and nobody HAS to post here before they post an application! This is just for people who are unsure and would like to have a discussion before they apply.
However, there are some rules.
1. Mods are the final decision makers. So, a lot of people love your character? Got great feedback? But then-- whaaaat?-- you post your app and it's REJECTED? GASP! Sorry, approval here does NOT substitute mod approval. Do NOT use this thread as basis for whining at the mods if your character is rejected. If you do, this thread is getting shut down. (PS: This rule applies EVEN IF ONE OF THE MODS GIVES YOU GOOD FEEDBACK IN THIS THREAD)
2. No content-less posts. I don't want to see any "OMG YES!" or any "HELL NO"s. You have to provide reasons. This post is for constructive discussion.
3. No flaming. This kinda goes with the above. If you think the character is fine but the player can't pull it off, BE CONSTRUCTIVE and don't insult the player.
4. BE HONEST. Speaks for itself. You think a character would be a terrible fit? Then don't say "Oh, it'll be wonderful!"
5. No plotting. A lot of times, people get all excited about making up plots for characters who aren't even in the game yet (and who MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED), leaving those who are in the game with nothing to do with... well, nothing to do. It's distracting and the excitement over "what-ifs" diverts too much from the actual game.
6. Don't take this personally. You do not equal your (potential) character. If everybody thinks it's a lousy character who wouldn't fit, it's NOT an attack on you or your RPing.
Put the character's name as the subject line (ONE CHARACTER PER COMMENT), and be sure to fill out the following form. Yes, some of the questions seem stupid, but these are things we'd like you to keep in mind BEFORE you apply for a character.
HAVE FUN.
Godmodding was briefly touched upon in our rules already, but let's talk about it, and its lesser cousin, Metagaming, here at greater length for a few minutes.
Godmodding involves giving your characters random advantages and/or crazy maneuvers to ensure they win/avoid dying/whatever. This can involve a lot of things:
1. Randomly defying physics to dodge an attack that they shouldn't be able to dodge.
2. Taking a hit that should hurt them but doesn't phase them in the least.
3. Moving or manipulating or doing harm to another player's character without their permission.
4. Giving your character abilities/powers/immunities that are not posted in your original application. This is important, especially for Inmates, since we expect their abilities to be significantly hindered, and have to approve whatever it is you put down that they can still do.
5. Metagaming -- which here means your character knows things they have no business knowing.
There is some give or take in fourth wall issues. Some characters here will inevitably come from fictional places according to other people. That's fine. See our post on Fourth Wall issues for more details, and for a list of posts by players detailing what they will allow to be known about their characters. Here's where it's not okay though: if your character has no reason to know it, they don't know it.
The Library is not an excuse for metagaming. In fact, if there isn't published literature on characters there that doesn't exist now, in the real world, you will not find it there. (And by literature, I do mean strictly literature. Not comics. Not movie/episode novel adaptations. Not screenplays.)

TLV - Fourth Wall Permissions
Aug. 15th, 2008 06:36 pmWhat is Fourth Walling?
Having characters from so many universes, it's hard to determine which pop culture references are acceptable, and which are not. For example, everybody knows Star Wars. It's a pretty famous series, endlessly quotable, with a lovable cast of characters. But once these characters cease to become fictions for others in the game, we can run into problems. How much can you, John Smith, know about Luke Skywalker? What is acceptable to tell him (or to even know about him), and what isn't? Some characters are avid pop culture nuts, and it would be helpful to let them know what they can and can't know about your character-- if anything at all!
While we expect there to be 4th Walling for characters of certain series, please be respectful of other players' wishes.

TLV - Character Requests

To request a character you'd like to see played in The Last Voyages, please copy, paste, and fill out the form below. One character per comment, please (not necessary, but it makes it easier to keep this up to date)! Character requests will be kept up for thirty days, or until the character becomes taken. If your character request expires, you're free to post your request again.

TLV - Character Applications (OLD FORM)
May. 4th, 2008 05:50 pmApplications are until 12:01 p.m., January 1, 2011.
[0 out of 20] total app slots filled.
Application Periods are held for the first full week of every month.
ETA 2/1/11: Please note that the guidelines for applications have been revised; we now expect at least five solid paragraphs for the personality section of applications. The application form has been revised to reflect this. Also, as of February 2011, we will only allow THREE APPLICATIONS PER FANDOM IN ONE APP CYCLE. This means that if one fandom receives three applications during application week, any additional applications for that fandom will not be accepted and will need to wait until the following application cycle.
Please read all rules and guidelines before submitting an application. Be sure to check the Taken Characters List and the Retired Characters List before posting an application here.
NOTES:
- We are no longer accepting apps for fandoms that are less than a month old. If you're unsure about something-- such as an episodic fandom-- please ask the mods for clarification.
- Trade-In Apps: Current players have the option of trading in a current character for a new one. Trade-In Apps will NOT count against the App Slots, so even if all slots are full, you can still trade-in for a new character. However, bear in mind that trade-in apps are not guaranteed approval for your character. If your trade-in application is rejected, you don't have to drop the character you were willing to trade in.
- In the interest of keeping a balanced and diverse cast list, we are presently not accepting applications from the following fandoms, due to a high volume of characters present in the game already. This list is subject to change, so please don't think it means you can never apply for a character in these fandoms!
No fandoms are capped at present.
Applications for members of all other large casts are accepted on a case by case basis. - New characters will not be accepted unless your existing ones are reliably meeting the activity requirements. This also applies if you have just come off hiatus; you need to demonstrate for two weeks that you are suitably active with existing characters before apping a new one or it will be rejected without reading it.
- As of February 2011, we will only allow THREE APPLICATIONS PER FANDOM IN ONE APP CYCLE. This means that if one fandom receives three applications during application week, any additional applications for that fandom will not be accepted and will need to wait until the following application cycle.

TLV - Character Reserves
May. 4th, 2008 05:48 pmTo reserve a character, fill out the form below. Your application will hold priority during the reserve period. Reserves will be acknowledged for two weeks. In the interest of minimizing competition in filling fandom slots, a slot will also be taken up on the Character Applications until the reserve runs out or the person applies. The slot will only be opened up again if the reserve runs out before an application is submitted. If you fail to submit an application, you must wait two weeks before reserving the same character again.

TLV - Retired Characters List
May. 1st, 2000 06:28 pmPlease note that, while not currently taken, the following characters have been through the game and have either graduated (for inmates) or made their deal with the Admiral and moved on (for wardens). Out of courtesy to their players and the work and development they've put into their characters, we consider their characters to be retired. Although their status (W, I, or I/W) is noted next to their retirement, please note that a retired warden is not automatically appable as a inmate, or vice versa.
If you are interested in applying for a retired character, please reach out to the mods in advance so we can let you know whether the character is eligible to be un-retired. While making our decision, we'll take into consideration how long it's been since the character was retired, and whether any current characters were around to remember or have CR with the retired character. We will be much more likely to accept an app for a character that was retired seven years ago than one for a character that was retired two years ago. If the previous player is accessible, we will respect their wishes, especially if they are still in the game. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
Please check the Taken Character list as well as this one before applying for a character. We also encourage you to fill out the Potential Application Form if you wish to apply for one of these characters.
