CHARACTER APPLICATIONS

Application periods are open all month, every month.

Please read all rules and guidelines before submitting an application. Be sure to check the Taken Characters list and the Retired Characters list before posting an application here.

NOTES:

1. After applying for a character, we ask that players allow 30 days before bringing their next character into the game. In some cases (warden or cast caps, upcoming major game events) players may approach the mod team and clear submitting an application a few days early, though it will not be approved before the 30 day mark.
   
   
2. If you are applying into an existing cast, please be aware that we may speak to players of characters close to (any version of) the character, and will speak to the players of canonmates of the character for which you are applying. We reserve the right to reject an application if it would render a current character or characters unplayable in the opinion of their player(s). If your app is rejected for this reason, we ask that you respect the decision.
   
   
3. Both samples may be taken from threads on the Test Drive Meme, as long as they are recent and match your application with respect to canonpoint and warden/inmate status. The TDM goes up once per month and is always marked on the Event Calendar. If you would prefer to write yours out and would like some inspiration, check out the event info/plotting post tags (flood, port, breach, player plots) on the OOC community; you're welcome to write a sample based on your character's reaction after one of these events!
   
   
4. Canons (or canonpoints, in the case of ongoing series) must have been out for at least 30 days before they can be applied for.
   
   
5. If you're reapping a character that you previously dropped and you plan to have them retain their memories of their previous stint onboard, please include at least a few sentences discussing how their previous stay affected them, and noting any relevant changes to their personality, worldview, and motivations. The more significant the changes, the more detail we'd like.

Keep in mind that inmates must have just died, or were about to die. If your character has no canon death, or if you'd like to pull them from a point well before their canon death, you may headcanon a death that makes sense for the character/canon and doesn't require too many logical leaps or extra steps. Things like "My city-dwelling inmate was hit by a bus" or "My gangster inmate died in a gunfight" would be fine for a headcanoned death, as would "My character is in a life-threatening situation at their pull point that they canonically survive, but for the purposes of the game I'm going to say that they die instead". <b>Inmate Justification:</b> Why does your character require redemption? How can working with a warden on the Barge help them achieve this? Feel free to just give a brief general overview here; we're going to ask for specifics down below. <b>Arrival:</b> Was your inmate character brought in against their will, or did they agree to come to the Barge and graduate instead of dying forever? <b>Abilities/Powers:</b> Remember that Inmates will have reduced powers, with dangerous, offensive (as opposed to defensive), and combat-related abilities being removed entirely. Please tell us both what your character can do when their powers are at full strength, as well as what your proposed limits and reductions for them are. <b>Inmate Information:</b> Please lay out the most important things that your character's warden will need to know about them. Remember that permanent wardens will receive a file on their inmate's entire life story, and while we won't require you to write out a full history here (though we'll ask for at least a link to one elsewhere in the app), we'd like to hear about the highlights in your own words! Special Note #1: The strength of Velvette's telekinesis will need to be limited to what a standard human could accomplish by hand (ex. small objects can be flung pretty fast, but not with abnormal speed, and the larger the object, the more difficult and exhausting it will be to move at all).

We thank you for taking the time to apply to Last Voyages. Overall, the moderators like and approve of your application; however, we do have some things we need clarification on before we can provide you with a final approval.

We'd like to see a Path to Redemption that goes a little further. Although inmates on the Barge don't need to fix every negative aspect of their life or personality in order to graduate, graduation can't just be the first steps towards making better choices in the future. Rather, it should involve meaningful, lasting change that means they're actually making better choices in their life at the time they graduate and having a more positive impact on others/the world at large as a result.

To be more specific, Vox needs to learn more how to care about other people beyond how they can serve his own needs. He doesn't consider the feelings of anyone, not even his "partners", when you get down to it. While he's happy to play at being close to Velvette and Valentino, he also ditches them immediately when it suits him and doesn't value them despite how much he also relies on them. There are brief periods where Vox does show some concern for them both, so it is possible for him to change, but it would take a lot of work. As previously noted, getting knocked down several pegs would be a big step in that direction - the belief that there's no real friendships has been very much ingrained in him at this point, so being in a position where he is reliant on others and may receive help without an expectation of anything in return would challenge this directly. Learning to care about others, making friends, and in turn not expect anything from them either would be huge changes for Vox to tackle - it's noted the Vox doesn't have any friends outside of the Vees (and I would argue they aren't "friends" to him either) so even that much would involve big shifts of how he views people in general.

Special Note: We'd like to see considerably more nerfs on Vox's powers to match the general expectation of inmate power levels. While player communication is always an important part of having a highly powered character in game, inmate power restrictions are understood to be an in-character measure for the Admiral to prevent new inmates from doing harm. He will have the following restrictions:

- Demonic transformation: He can still transform to his full demon form, but his strength and speed in that form will be limited to the high range of what is possible for mortal humans.
- Electricity generation: He will not be able to generate enough electricity to cause serious harm or death regardless of the circumstances -- he'll be limited to causing the equivalent of painful static shocks.
- Technological manipulation: Barge-native technology, such as the communicators or innate Barge functions (lights, gravity, air, etc), are not subject to manipulation and won't be even if his powers are fully restored in the future. Also, he'll be fully unable to use his powers to affect any devices that are inside another character's cabin unless that other character ICly gives him permission to access their cabin with his powers. However, we're fine with allowing him to control and manipulate technology that's within a certain range - say on the same floor of the Barge?
- Hologram generation: In addition to not being able to generate weapons with this power, he'll find that his ability to create solid objects is limited to about the size and mass of objects that he would be able to move with his own hands; visual-only holograms won't be limited.
- Mind control: Since this is a power he very much does use to cause harm to others in canon (and controlling Angel Dust also does harm to Angel) it will need to be nerfed on entry. The compulsion and memory altering aspects will be completely nerfed, although we're okay with having him be able to speak directly into the minds of people he's trying to compel -- he could certainly use his voice-imitation in conjunction with that to try to persuade or manipulate them, but he can't override their free will.
