TLV - Potential Application Discussion (Old Form)

POTENTIAL APPLICATION DISCUSSION

Thinking about applying for a character, but not quite sure if they're a good fit? This post is dedicated to discussion of that very thing! A jury of your peers will help you in deciding whether or not a character you suddenly have a hankering for would be a fit for the Barge!

THIS IS NOT COMPULSORY. Nobody HAS to participate, and nobody HAS to post here before they post an application! This is just for people who are unsure and would like to have a discussion before they apply.

However, there are some rules.

1. Mods are the final decision makers. So, a lot of people love your character? Got great feedback? But then-- whaaaat?-- you post your app and it's REJECTED? GASP! Sorry, approval here does NOT substitute mod approval. Do NOT use this thread as basis for whining at the mods if your character is rejected. If you do, this thread is getting shut down. (PS: This rule applies EVEN IF ONE OF THE MODS GIVES YOU GOOD FEEDBACK IN THIS THREAD)
2. No content-less posts. I don't want to see any "OMG YES!" or any "HELL NO"s. You have to provide reasons. This post is for constructive discussion.
3. No flaming. This kinda goes with the above. If you think the character is fine but the player can't pull it off, BE CONSTRUCTIVE and don't insult the player.
4. BE HONEST. Speaks for itself. You think a character would be a terrible fit? Then don't say "Oh, it'll be wonderful!"
5. No plotting. A lot of times, people get all excited about making up plots for characters who aren't even in the game yet (and who MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED), leaving those who are in the game with nothing to do with... well, nothing to do. It's distracting and the excitement over "what-ifs" diverts too much from the actual game.
6. Don't take this personally. You do not equal your (potential) character. If everybody thinks it's a lousy character who wouldn't fit, it's NOT an attack on you or your RPing.

Put the character's name as the subject line (ONE CHARACTER PER COMMENT), and be sure to fill out the following form. Yes, some of the questions seem stupid, but these are things we'd like you to keep in mind BEFORE you apply for a character.

HAVE FUN.

Character Name: Count Dracula
Series: Dracula by Bram Stoker
Warden or Inmate: Inmate
Do they meet all rules and requirements?: I believe so.
Do you think they will be active and interact with others?: He'd start fights with all the big men on the barge and belittle the women, and take great pleasure in doing both.
Would this character be active in ports and floods, or sit out?: He seems to be the type that, in spite of all things, is VERY eager to learn, so while he might be offended or angered by the effects floods and ports may have on him, he would likely still take part in many.
Why do you want them?: I need another Inmate, and sometimes playing a sexist doink is just what I need to lighten my mood.
Potential Concerns: Ros Hates Vampires :O

I hope none of my writing has generated dislike for our fanged brethren... :)

I have seen your portrayal of this character and often thought it would suit this forum much better than the other! I really like how you put both aattention to fictional (Stoker making Vlad an ancestor in the genology, not the self-same character) and historical (cultural attitudes) detail in the main profile, while actually using it in the resulting writing. To me, that made it well beyond the walking stereotype this character is so often sadly shown as.

I'd be interested, however, in what sorts of abilities would be removed and retained.

BLAH, don't let my hatred of vampires deter you from apping him. You know why I hate vampires in RPGs, and I know that Stoker Dracula isn't the sort that I hate. I think he could be a very interesting addition, but I'm wondering how far you'd restrict his powers/which he'd keep?

And no, E, your writing hasn't generated my dislike for vampires XD

It's a good question, really. He's got a pretty wide array of powers. I think I'd keep his powers of transformation -- to an extent. But super strength/mind control/animal control/impervious when not in sunlight, etc -- yeah, probably not. Anything he can inflict on something outside of himself = no.

Phew!

As I'm the one that asked for someone to play this character in the first place...heh! Of course I want to see him.

I do think the game has quite a few vampires, already, though, so I'm torn between knowing you'd do an awesome job with him, and th thought that this could be a vampire-overrun game.

[identity profile] major-west.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. This. This is why I hate vampires and don't want to see more of them. While they can be done well, I always prefer this game having more... human (or human-ish without super magic strength and I'M SO HAWT I SPARKLE WITH ETERNAL YOOOUUUUTH blech) types. The thought that the superpowered, inhuman types can outnumber the regular humans bugs me. I don't think we're at that point yet, but I don't want this to become one of those games where the more "normal" human characters are in the minority. And yeah, I know I say this while playing a Time Lord, so I'm a hypocrite.

ANYWAY. That said, I know you'd do a great job with Dracula 'cause I've seen your Dracula, and he's not full of the stuff that I hate. But yeah... torn because I don't want to see any more vampires.

I'm not all that sure you can really say we're being swamped by vampires. :)

(1) Aleera, Spike and Lestat: Aleera definitely brings it up, all the time. Lestat might or might not - he's not posted enough to make a judgement on that. Spike is, but hasn't ever been given muich of a reason to bring it up, even in conversation. Besides which, he's not villainous. :)

(2) Rayne: She's half-vampire, but I hardly ever delve into that side of her nature, which means it's pretty much null and void, for the majority of the time. I think the only time it ever came into play, was when I had her drain the Butcheress into a comatose state, because she was almost killing various medical staff. Aside from that, I don't think I've ever really brough it up much (aside from during that 'confession' about it).

(3) The Butcheress: Not an immortal blood-drinking type. In game canon, she's just an ordinary human who simply happens to have a blood-drinking fetish, which makes her not all that different to, say, Lector or someone like that.

So, really, it's only Aleera, Spike and Lestat, with one of those rarely likely to ever explore it. :) Unless Aleera gets her dirty little wish and turns someone... XD

I didn't say we were swamped...just that I thought there were quite a few, and that I wouldn't like to see the game get swamped by them.

Yeah, I can identify with that. :) 'Polychromatic' has tons, although virtually all of those are from animated shows.

On here, I think it's different, as most of their more powerful abilities can be deliberately taken away.

That's true...
