TLV - Potential Application Discussion (Old Form)
Thinking about applying for a character, but not quite sure if they're a good fit? This post is dedicated to discussion of that very thing! A jury of your peers will help you in deciding whether or not a character you suddenly have a hankering for would be a fit for the Barge!
THIS IS NOT COMPULSORY. Nobody HAS to participate, and nobody HAS to post here before they post an application! This is just for people who are unsure and would like to have a discussion before they apply.
However, there are some rules.
1. Mods are the final decision makers. So, a lot of people love your character? Got great feedback? But then-- whaaaat?-- you post your app and it's REJECTED? GASP! Sorry, approval here does NOT substitute mod approval. Do NOT use this thread as basis for whining at the mods if your character is rejected. If you do, this thread is getting shut down. (PS: This rule applies EVEN IF ONE OF THE MODS GIVES YOU GOOD FEEDBACK IN THIS THREAD)
2. No content-less posts. I don't want to see any "OMG YES!" or any "HELL NO"s. You have to provide reasons. This post is for constructive discussion.
3. No flaming. This kinda goes with the above. If you think the character is fine but the player can't pull it off, BE CONSTRUCTIVE and don't insult the player.
4. BE HONEST. Speaks for itself. You think a character would be a terrible fit? Then don't say "Oh, it'll be wonderful!"
5. No plotting. A lot of times, people get all excited about making up plots for characters who aren't even in the game yet (and who MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED), leaving those who are in the game with nothing to do with... well, nothing to do. It's distracting and the excitement over "what-ifs" diverts too much from the actual game.
6. Don't take this personally. You do not equal your (potential) character. If everybody thinks it's a lousy character who wouldn't fit, it's NOT an attack on you or your RPing.
Put the character's name as the subject line (ONE CHARACTER PER COMMENT), and be sure to fill out the following form. Yes, some of the questions seem stupid, but these are things we'd like you to keep in mind BEFORE you apply for a character.
HAVE FUN.

Re: Lolquickpostfromaborrowedlaptop!
So I think Nathan gets pushed to the side until they need his morally grey-ness to be a plot point (much like Elle with her sociopathy) and people are like "wtf why is Nathan such an ass to Peter?" "Well, he's ALWAYS been like that. The touching comes with a price."
I think that Nathan's the kind of man who likes attention. He was top of his class, went into politics, he secretly loves it when Peter fucks up because then he feels like he's needed. Nathan functions on being needed and balancing his responsibilities. It's just how he is. He likes to feel like he's important and while he doesn't need to do something to help people, like Peter does, he does need to prove that he is capable of it when the occassion calls for it. And he takes his job very seriously.
Ang and I were discussing reasons for Nathan to be on the barge and one of them was that at the end of season one, Nathan was in the hospital and he made a deal to come here to bring Peter back to life (cause he thought Peter died in that silly explosion thing). So say he came here for that and maybe he wasn't totally into the idea but once he saw Peter and assumed that his little brother was in over his head (with his inmate and the thing with Elle) I think he'd stick around and try because of that. And the wardens are kind of disorganized and he'd see the potential to bring them all together and rise to the top and crown himself the new Admiral. ;)
So maybe he wouldn't put his whole being into rehabilitating someone. Unless he got a really needy and kind of pathetic inmate and that would kick his desire to have someone need him into overdrive. But I also think he'd recognize that the way to the top is to rehabilitate as many people as he can.

It would amuse me so damn much if Nathan came to the barge and just politic'd his way to the top! BUT ON TO MY ACTUAL REPLY!
Basically, I'm not disagreeing with you, I do think that he could make a warden if the person apping him could write it believably, or an inmate, for the same reason! But because he is such a complex character type, and because other players (Our heroes crew <3) would be somwhat dependant on him for interactions, I would want to see an app that game me literally no doubt that the writer understood all of his motivations, and more than that - that they would actually intergrate them into how he was played instead of just writing a strong application and then just falling back into playing him as one of the archetypes that can be applied to him. It's a really hard thing to avoid with a LOT of characters, but I know how frustrating it can be to have someone from your canon - who your character will definately interact with - in a game and have the interactions just not feel like them, or to have them just forgetting some aspect of the character that is really important to the way you and they relate to one another.
I definately don't want to discourage him, because I adore Nathan and would really love to see one on the barge, but I do think that it's an app that I'd reccommend thinking a lot about before posting. Not just on whether someone could get him in, but on whether they could sustain writing him as well.
