POTENTIAL APPLICATION DISCUSSION

Thinking about applying for a character, but not quite sure if they're a good fit? This post is dedicated to discussion of that very thing! A jury of your peers will help you in deciding whether or not a character you suddenly have a hankering for would be a fit for the Barge!

THIS IS NOT COMPULSORY. Nobody HAS to participate, and nobody HAS to post here before they post an application! This is just for people who are unsure and would like to have a discussion before they apply.

However, there are some rules.

1. Mods are the final decision makers. So, a lot of people love your character? Got great feedback? But then-- whaaaat?-- you post your app and it's REJECTED? GASP! Sorry, approval here does NOT substitute mod approval. Do NOT use this thread as basis for whining at the mods if your character is rejected. If you do, this thread is getting shut down. (PS: This rule applies EVEN IF ONE OF THE MODS GIVES YOU GOOD FEEDBACK IN THIS THREAD)
2. No content-less posts. I don't want to see any "OMG YES!" or any "HELL NO"s. You have to provide reasons. This post is for constructive discussion.
3. No flaming. This kinda goes with the above. If you think the character is fine but the player can't pull it off, BE CONSTRUCTIVE and don't insult the player.
4. BE HONEST. Speaks for itself. You think a character would be a terrible fit? Then don't say "Oh, it'll be wonderful!"
5. No plotting. A lot of times, people get all excited about making up plots for characters who aren't even in the game yet (and who MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED), leaving those who are in the game with nothing to do with... well, nothing to do. It's distracting and the excitement over "what-ifs" diverts too much from the actual game.
6. Don't take this personally. You do not equal your (potential) character. If everybody thinks it's a lousy character who wouldn't fit, it's NOT an attack on you or your RPing.

Put the character's name as the subject line (ONE CHARACTER PER COMMENT), and be sure to fill out the following form. Yes, some of the questions seem stupid, but these are things we'd like you to keep in mind BEFORE you apply for a character.

Series: Sweeney Todd (The play, not the movie)
Warden or Inmate: Inmate
Do they meet all rules and requirements?: I think so!
Do you think they will be active and interact with others?: Definitely!
Would this character be active in ports and floods, or sit out?: Very active I think.
Why do you want them?: Well, Tobias is just an extremely bizarre character. Mind you I'd be taking him from the end of the play and I'm pretty much thinking he'd be killed by someone in the asylum he was in or quite possibly actually have a struggle with Todd?

Potential Concerns: I don't want him to be a child as in the stage play he's technically... not. Stage Play Tobias was more of a... slightly challenged teenager than a child. In the revival of the musical it was set up that Tobias ended up in a mental institution after the events of the play, constantly singing his little nursery rhymes.

My thing is is Tobias can be reformed! He really can if his warden is willing to try hard enough. He's also very distrustful of men which can lead to serious drama... and yeah. I just wanted to know peoples opinions of this.

Oh, I love Toby quite a bit! Unfortunately I really don't know that he belongs in the barge, I mean, perhaps I don't know some part of the canon, but as far as I can see he really isn't an inmate character. He was just a young man who got caught up in a bad situation, and suffered a terrible trauma which caused him to lose his mind. I haven't seen the revival, but unless there was something in it which suggests that he became violent or destructive willfully and regularly then I really don't think he would be an inmate.

I mean, I know he killed Todd at the end of the play, but considering Todd was a multiple murderer who had been planning to kill him and Tobias was insane at the time, I really don't know that it would be reasonable to have him as an inmate because of this. I guess as far as I can see, while he could be rehabilitated, it wouldn't be from being a bad person, it would be from mental illness, and while (granted) there are obviously other inmates here who have mental illness problems at the end of the day the Barge isn't really about that.

I love Tobias, he was my favorite character in the musical and I'd love to play with him, but I honestly don't think that he could justifiably be an inmate here.

While I would absolutely LOVE to see a stage-version Sweeney Todd character here, and Tobias is pretty much my favorite, I'm gonna have to agree with Catherine on this one. He definitely COULD bring a really interesting dynamic to the game (particularly with the distrust of men), but Tobias was more of a victim than anything else, and I don't think he has the fundamentally delusional (well, he's arguably delusional, but not in a harmful way to anybody but Sweeney) /selfish/skewed/antisocial mindset that would warrant him being an inmate. If there were a REALLY great argument made for his being an inmate, he could work, but as it is he doesn't seem to be a good fit for it.
