TLV - Potential Application Discussion (Old Form)

POTENTIAL APPLICATION DISCUSSION

Thinking about applying for a character, but not quite sure if they're a good fit? This post is dedicated to discussion of that very thing! A jury of your peers will help you in deciding whether or not a character you suddenly have a hankering for would be a fit for the Barge!

THIS IS NOT COMPULSORY. Nobody HAS to participate, and nobody HAS to post here before they post an application! This is just for people who are unsure and would like to have a discussion before they apply.

However, there are some rules.

1. Mods are the final decision makers. So, a lot of people love your character? Got great feedback? But then-- whaaaat?-- you post your app and it's REJECTED? GASP! Sorry, approval here does NOT substitute mod approval. Do NOT use this thread as basis for whining at the mods if your character is rejected. If you do, this thread is getting shut down. (PS: This rule applies EVEN IF ONE OF THE MODS GIVES YOU GOOD FEEDBACK IN THIS THREAD)
2. No content-less posts. I don't want to see any "OMG YES!" or any "HELL NO"s. You have to provide reasons. This post is for constructive discussion.
3. No flaming. This kinda goes with the above. If you think the character is fine but the player can't pull it off, BE CONSTRUCTIVE and don't insult the player.
4. BE HONEST. Speaks for itself. You think a character would be a terrible fit? Then don't say "Oh, it'll be wonderful!"
5. No plotting. A lot of times, people get all excited about making up plots for characters who aren't even in the game yet (and who MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED), leaving those who are in the game with nothing to do with... well, nothing to do. It's distracting and the excitement over "what-ifs" diverts too much from the actual game.
6. Don't take this personally. You do not equal your (potential) character. If everybody thinks it's a lousy character who wouldn't fit, it's NOT an attack on you or your RPing.

Put the character's name as the subject line (ONE CHARACTER PER COMMENT), and be sure to fill out the following form. Yes, some of the questions seem stupid, but these are things we'd like you to keep in mind BEFORE you apply for a character.

HAVE FUN.

Albert Grant

Character Name: Alby Grant
Series: Big Love
Warden or Inmate: LOLOL INMATE.
Do they meet all rules and requirements?: Yeah
Do you think they will be active and interact with others?: ER. Sorta. He's really closed off and creepy, and he probably wouldn't seek OUT interactions with others frivolously, but he wouldn't run away from interactions. Still, it's a problem to consider.
Would this character be active in ports and floods, or sit out?: Yeah, although not willingly.
Why do you want them?: I think despite being a really creepy fella, Alby actually has a lot of potential for an interesting storyline; a warden who'd have him would first have to get him over his Juniper Creek indoctrination to get him to fully experience life (as a closeted homosexual + son of the 'Prophet' and living in a fundamentalist religion that isn't exactly accepting of his 'proclivities', as he calls them, he's got a lot of repression and neediness issues), and then try to work on his general manipulativeness and borderline sociopathy.

Potential Concerns:
1. THE RELIGION. He's a member of a hardcore fundamentalist cult-ish offshoot of Mormonism, so I'd have to get that down.

2. I want to app Albie Kinsella from Cracker (WHOSE POTENTIAL APP THING IS ABOVE), but I only have one character slot left/time enough for one more, so I'd have to choose between them. AND I LIKE THEM BOTH :C

3. THE RELIGION.

4. He's probably not a social butterfly, and I have enough problems with Claude's introverted ass.

Here's a clip of him generally being creepy with his wives. THEY CALL HIM "FATHER" :C

What is it with you and wanting to app characters named Alby/ie?

His wiki article looks interesting. The video would probably look interesting also, but there are small children asleep and I lost my headphones. Barge needs inmates, so you get a point in his favor there. I'm really interested in his character. Religious nutjobs are always fun!

I think that with the barge, even if the character is an introvert, stuff's gonna happen (floods, warden chat, ports, the obligatory where the hell am I post) that'll help make them slightly more extroverted.

With the problem about the religion, you mean that you'd have to play fun research times to find out what the religion entails, correct? Or, is my lack of sleep getting to me?

As for potential concern #2, I specifically posted from the Harv account so I could say just flip a coin if you're really stuck. xD

Yup! Research times. I'm really afraid of misrepresenting his religion, even if it's fictional, since it has ties to real ones.

AND I DUNNO! My guys either all have the same actors, or the same names D:

ps. From what I've heard of the show, it's not a fake religion at all. Just strict fundamentalist mormon.

but I could be wrong

Ohh, okay, 'cause from the reading I did, their particular brand of fundamentalism is fictional, but with a lot of inspiration from real life groups.

Oh whoops. Okay. Well then, I can help with the real-ish stuff but not the fake-ness. <3 Maybe I'll go watch it just for you.

I ENCOURAGE EVERYBODY TO WATCH IT!

It's a very underrated little show D:

I think you could find things to do with him so long as you had a good warden. I haven't seen much of the show, but I got a feel from a few clips. He's not entirely antisocial, just very introverted. And I could see him trying to sort of re-form a clan with those he believes may be virtuous.

With the religion? Mwa haha. I live in Utah. Everyone I know (except for like two of my friends) either are or were raised mormon. It's not the same as the fundamentalist (we have those here too!), but it's enough. So I could help you with that.

I definitely think it would be an interesting character to have on the Barge and would bring a fun dynamic. That said, I have no idea who your other potential char is, so I can't say as far as which to choose.

Yeah, I think my biggest problem is giving him an excuse to interact with 'sinners' (outside of aaawkward anonymous sex encounters), because he isn't really a preachy/converty type of person. Actually, I don't even know how much he really BELIEVES in the Principle, and how much he follows just because it's expected of him (or convenient to gain power). He is definitely less sheltered than a lot of the Compound people, since he went to college, so I guess I just need to figure out how he interacted with others in those days.

If I go for Alby, I will DEFINITELY hit you up on Mormon stuff!

IN THE END, choosing between him and the Robert Carlyle Albie will be my biggest dilemma, it seems.

Again, I think that would work out with the right warden. I could see him viewing this as a test of faith maybe, so staying religious but more open/social (like he might have been at college). Then if his warden is like "you need to make friends to get out of here", among other things, he could slowly come to get to know people better. Plus a different lifestyle could start tempting him.

I liked that show, but it did not continue to get broadcast, over here, beyond the very first series!

The video makes the personality seem very interesting... Why an inmate category?

[identity profile] soundof-drums.livejournal.com 2009-02-11 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'd make him an inmate because he: stalked his niece to intimidate the family, put snakes in his brother-in-law's bed, forced his father to remain bedridden by pumping him full of painkillers and not allowing anybody to see him, is generally schemey and manipulative, intimidates and threatens people to get what he wants, etc.

Of course, half the stuff he does is against some pretty nasty people (or people who're more "villainous" than he is), and he's just pretty damaged in general, but it's shown that he's a pretty self-serving individual in addition to that, and has no real loyalty to anybody but himself. And he almost dies in the season premiere, so there's a perfect moment to take him from.
