TLV - Potential Application Discussion (Old Form)
Thinking about applying for a character, but not quite sure if they're a good fit? This post is dedicated to discussion of that very thing! A jury of your peers will help you in deciding whether or not a character you suddenly have a hankering for would be a fit for the Barge!
THIS IS NOT COMPULSORY. Nobody HAS to participate, and nobody HAS to post here before they post an application! This is just for people who are unsure and would like to have a discussion before they apply.
However, there are some rules.
1. Mods are the final decision makers. So, a lot of people love your character? Got great feedback? But then-- whaaaat?-- you post your app and it's REJECTED? GASP! Sorry, approval here does NOT substitute mod approval. Do NOT use this thread as basis for whining at the mods if your character is rejected. If you do, this thread is getting shut down. (PS: This rule applies EVEN IF ONE OF THE MODS GIVES YOU GOOD FEEDBACK IN THIS THREAD)
2. No content-less posts. I don't want to see any "OMG YES!" or any "HELL NO"s. You have to provide reasons. This post is for constructive discussion.
3. No flaming. This kinda goes with the above. If you think the character is fine but the player can't pull it off, BE CONSTRUCTIVE and don't insult the player.
4. BE HONEST. Speaks for itself. You think a character would be a terrible fit? Then don't say "Oh, it'll be wonderful!"
5. No plotting. A lot of times, people get all excited about making up plots for characters who aren't even in the game yet (and who MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED), leaving those who are in the game with nothing to do with... well, nothing to do. It's distracting and the excitement over "what-ifs" diverts too much from the actual game.
6. Don't take this personally. You do not equal your (potential) character. If everybody thinks it's a lousy character who wouldn't fit, it's NOT an attack on you or your RPing.
Put the character's name as the subject line (ONE CHARACTER PER COMMENT), and be sure to fill out the following form. Yes, some of the questions seem stupid, but these are things we'd like you to keep in mind BEFORE you apply for a character.
HAVE FUN.

Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl II
Series: Watchmen (Book)
Warden or Inmate: WARDEN, geez
Do they meet all rules and requirements?: Yeah
Do you think they will be active and interact with others?: Yeah
Would this character be active in ports and floods, or sit out?: YESSS
Why do you want them?: Well, I intend to take on another character when summer rolls around, because that's when there's a dry spell in my job (USUALLY), so I'll need stuff to do to kill time. BUT! I want whoever that character is to be somebody totally different from my usual type (so, still got to narrow down to one from: Bill Nash... if only he didn't have fucking John Simm as a PB; Adaleen Grant, who I'll decide on more after the Big Love season finale TOMORROWWW; Alby Grant, ditto; and now Dan).
So, Dan's my favorite character from one of my favorite comics. If I took him up, I'd get to play a nice, normal guy, with a lot issues of inadequacy, feelings of impotent helplessness, and a bit of an addiction to costumed adventuring (and probably the control that comes with it). Plus, he's got a sort of childish idealism, that's been weighted down by the fears and disappointments that mark his life around the time the story takes place. And uh... I'm sick, so I'm probably being incoherent right now. Basically, he's a nicely complicated character, and it'd be fun to play a paunchy, ageing nerd who loves mythology and can build gadgets. And he might bust the costume out for ports and do some crimefighting.
Plus, the potential interactions with our potential Rorschach could be fantastic.
And he looks totally Devo.
EDIT: OH YEAH! And also, since I'll probably use Patrick Wilson from the film as his PB (since I mean, with the extra weight and bad fashion, he looks just like Dan ANYWAY and would give me more flexibility with making icons), he could have some potentially awkward/hilarious/horrible interactions with Christine and the Hard Candy chick.
Potential Concerns: I need to re-read the book again before I try to take him on... which won't be a problem at all. But on top of that, I'd have to familiarize myself with ornithology and fakey technobabble, the latter of which I'm AAAAWFUL at.
Also, I fear that while out of costume (and I wouldn't have him in costume much, most likely, since it's kind of as awkward as trying to have Batman on the Barge), he'd be "too normal" and not have much to do here? I DUNNO. I'm still thinking through a bunch of options before I try to pick a character to apply for down the line.
Re: Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl II
Faking stuff is earlier than you make it out to be. I have taken psychology, so Sylar's psychobabble is from me, but! All of Nathan's politician-y things are faked. As is most of Mal's chinese and such. You just only look it up when you need it. I did have to look up watchmaking for Sylar. Popped open a few good sites, spent 45min or so reading, and now know more about watches than most people ever will. It's kinda cool, actually. Same thing. You read up on Star Trek engines or concept cars or the first airplanes and combine them with other crazy things. I can even help with that if you need. <3
I was kinda thinking that, but DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE NORMAL. He's still a warden (ohman, I can just see he and Hayley having fun times) and, more so, he's a nice guy. He'd be one of the few people that genuinely wanted to help everyone unless they were evil. And come on.. the costume and kicking peoples' asses? Rad.
THAT SAID.. I would definitely want you to study up on personality. Because I love my Patrick Wilson and I love my NightOwlII and I'd be a little disappointed if the voice came out wrong.
And as I don't know Bill Nash or anyone from Big Love, I support Dan the most. <3
Re: Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl II
AND TRUE. I'm okay at faking stuff most of the time, but SCIENCE was always my biggest weakness, so... I FEAR IT. The rest of the stuff he nerds on, I'm pretty much familiar with, being a big mythology/Arthurian legend dork, but it's the SCIENCE.
BUT AHH, the potential? SO MUCH FUN. But yeah, first thing's first is I re-read the book. After that, I have a whole month to plan out whatever I want, since LOLLL I AIN'T APPLYING FOR ANOTHER CHARACTER BEFORE MAY.
Re: Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl II
Anyway, don't worry about faking stuff. I've got Daniel, who's the king of random knowledge and Mr. Lawyer-face himself. Like Ang said, making up stuff is easier than you think. Wikipedia is your friend, as is the internet.
And really, considering the motely assortment we've got here "too normal" can be a good thing. You need a sane guy to help balance out the crazy. Dan's a nice guy and he'd genuinely want to help people. That being said, I love Watchmen and so I'm all for this!
Re: Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl II
But of course, I support your Simm addiction most of all ;D
