TLV - Character Applications

CHARACTER APPLICATIONS

Application periods are open all month, every month.

The Final Fantasy VII Compilation cast is at cap, and FFVII Compilation apps are currently closed.

Please read all rules and guidelines before submitting an application. Be sure to check the Taken Characters list and the Retired Characters list before posting an application here.

NOTES:
  1. After applying for a character, we ask that players allow 30 days before bringing their next character into the game. In some cases (warden or cast caps, upcoming major game events) players may approach the mod team and clear submitting an application a few days early, though it will not be approved before the 30 day mark.

  2. If you are applying into an existing cast, please be aware that we may speak to players of characters close to (any version of) the character, and will speak to the players of canonmates of the character for which you are applying. We reserve the right to reject an application if it would render a current character or characters unplayable in the opinion of their player(s). If your app is rejected for this reason, we ask that you respect the decision.

  3. Both samples may be taken from threads on the Test Drive Meme, as long as they are recent and match your application with respect to canonpoint and warden/inmate status. The TDM goes up once per month and is always marked on the Event Calendar. If you would prefer to write yours out and would like some inspiration, check out the Flood Event tag on the OOC community; you're welcome to write a sample based on your character's reaction after one of these events! Here are a few popular choices.

  4. Canons (or canonpoints, in the case of ongoing series) must have been out for at least 30 days before they can be applied for.

  5. If you're reapping a character that you previously dropped and you plan to have them retain their memories of their previous stint onboard, please include at least a few sentences discussing how their previous stay affected them, and noting any relevant changes to their personality, worldview, and motivations. The more significant the changes, the more detail we'd like.

Character Name: Ganondorf Dragmire
Series: The Legend of Zelda. Particularly Twilight Princess, but I might appropriate elements from other entries in the series. Ganondorf is a single character who is reincarnated multiple times over the course of the series.
Age: Looks 40-ish, actually in his 200s, not even counting time spent exiled from the physical world.
From When?: Ganondorf is pulled from the moment of his death at the hands of Link, the game's hero wielding the only weapon capable of killing Ganondorf.

Inmate Justification: Ganondorf is a schemer and murderer who aimed to overthrow a kingdom, shattered and corrupted a holy relic in his ambition to claim it, and has inflicted ruin on multiple lands through his dark magic.

Arrival: Against his will.

Abilities/Powers: On the Barge, Ganondorf is limited to his physical strength and skill, though these are significant given the facts that he's nearly eight feet tall and stacked with muscle upon muscle, and he's had centuries to hone his weaponry skills. At his full strength, Ganondorf is a master of dark magic, which allows him to do various wizardly things including commanding monsters, manifesting himself from afar as a phantom presence, teleportation, firing magical attacks, and enhancing his physical abilities. He has a talent for studying, appropriating, and corrupting other power sources--in many games he finds some magical macguffin or strange realm and claims it for himself, using its power to bedevil the world.

Inmate Information: Ganondorf is ambitious above all, destined to seek ultimate power again and again across multiple reincarnations while Link and Zelda oppose him. He has some knowledge of his destiny, and seeks to overcome this destiny by, well... winning.

He isn't trustworthy per se, as he's a schemer and a violent usurper. But he does have a strange sense of honor, and he can be negotiated with unless his pride is on the line. Wardens are advised not to overplay their authority over him unless they want an adversarial relationship.

Path to Redemption: Ganondorf's personal goal will be to overthrow the Admiral and claim such phenomenal power for himself. He's a schemer willing to play the long game, so he'll resentfully play along with the role he's been given. Ideally he'd lead the Inmates in a revolution after gaining their loyalty, and he will use violence strategically to that end when necessary.

Of course, that's his plan. His path to redemption rests on acceptance that he can be trusted and admired for who he is, and being given evidence that more power won't actually make him a better leader.

He's likely to seek out Wardens he thinks he can manipulate, but he will actually respect a Warden with the courage to challenge him despite his pride. He may become enraged when humbled, but being humbled is exactly what he needs, and he's more capable of change without the power of the Triforce feeding his power-hunger.

History: Ganondorf was born to the oft-maligned desert tribe called the Gerudo. The Gerudo were exiled from the kingdom of Hyrule long ago, and have a reputation as thieves and thugs. Most Gerudo are women, so men have an exalted place when they're born--Ganondorf was declared a Chief at a young age, and then declared himself King of all Gerudo as part of his long-term plan to reclaim Hyrule for his people.

In attempting to claim the Triforce--the power that the Three Goddesses used to create the world--he broke it and corrupted the world, an act that echoed throughout time and across timelines. Such was his power that none alive could slay him, so he was sealed away between realms. Even sealed away, he was able to manifest enough of his power to instigate a coup in the Twilight Realm, resulting in the entire realm being cursed. He fed on the devastation until he had the power to break free of his imprisonment with godlike power.

Then he was slain by a hero wielding the Master Sword.

Sample Network Entry:

Warden,

You may have heard my name already. You have certainly seen me walking the decks. If I'm to be put to work on this prison galley, I would prefer the Engine Room. I suspect it will occupy my mind and body more than anything else here. To whom should I report for training, and when?

Ganondorf

Character Name: Stede Bonnet
Series: Our Flag Means Death
Age: Age and time is kind of nebulous in the series. Stede was born in 1688 per the show canon, and the show takes place in 1717, which would make him 29, but the age of his actor and the age of his children plus the general time he spent living in Barbados makes this seem very strange. So we are going with a nice, nebulous Mid to late 40s.

From When?: Stede survives the entire series, so I am going to headcanon a near-death experience that takes place between Season 1 and Season 2, in which he has left Barbados on his dinghy, in search Edward, his crew, and his ship, and a hurricane happens upon him and nearly drowns him.

Inmate Justification: Stede is a pirate captain, for better or worse, and has inadvertently had a hand in the death of one man, been present for the accidental suicide of another, had a hand in a number of raids, and other various sorts of criminal activity. He's also ran away from home and abandoned his family, though the reasons are complicated and nuanced - his marriage was unhappy, he was miserable trapped in a life that was slowly killing him or slowly turning him into his father. He felt that everyone would be happier if he were gone. He also abandoned Edward Teach, the man he loves, in a panic after nearly being murdered by a vicious man from his past. He's got a good heart, but he's certainly not innocent.

Arrival: Stede was found near death, drowning, and given the option. Desperate to seek out Edward and correct his mistakes, he took the second chance he was offered, not really knowing what all that meant.

Abilities/Powers: Stede has no magical powers - aside from being a Polite Menace to the Nth Degree. He is just a man.

Inmate Information: Stede was born a member of the landed gentry, and was raised by a strict and cold father who emotionally neglected and outright abused him for not living up to his idea of what masculinity was supposed to look like. It was very early on in the home that it was established that Stede could never live up to these expectations, because he was a soft boy who loved soft things, and disliked blood and violence. This was further emphasized when he was shipped off to boarding school and was subjected to a brutal gang of bullies for all of his adolescence.

As an adult, his father forced him into an arranged marriage with a woman he had never met, and while Mary is a perfectly fine woman, she and Stede never did get along, and Stede was so deep in the closet that he did not even realize that he was solely interested in men. The marriage was deeply unhappy for both of them, though they managed to have two children that he did love very much. Still, Mary often overheard him crying when he thought he was alone - he forced himself to bottle up all of his pain, becoming distant and disinterested. It was after a disastrous wedding anniversary that Stede stole away on his own privately commissioned ship, abandoning his family in an attempt to find freedom of his own and ensure that they were happier without him - he left the vast majority of his wealth to Mary and the children.

He pays his motley crew a salary, and tries to foster a kinder, more positive and less violent, less toxic brand of piracy, but his naivety gets him into a lot of trouble early on. He encourages his crew to talk things through, to express themselves openly, but he himself never does talk about himself in the same way, because of years of suppressing himself to protect himself. One of his childhood bullies, Nigel, a Royal Navy captain, boards his ship and taunts Stede to the point that Stede hits him on the back of the head with a brass paperweight - his bully falls on his sword and dies gruesomely because of it. He is eventually stabbed by the Spanish, his first near death experience, which is when he meets Edward Teach.

The weeks that he and Edward Teach travel together affect both men, both of them falling in love with one another unwittingly. Though he and Edward share most things, Stede still never opens up about much of his repression to Edward, and always presents a confident, bold front as much as possible as a mask. Eventually, Chauncey, Nigel's twin brother and another childhood bully, tracks Stede down with a taste for bloody revenge. Stede evades death because Edward saves his life using the Act of Grace, in which they both sign their lives away to the Royal Navy for ten years. It is while at this privateer's camp that Ed confesses his feelings for him, and they share a first kiss. Stede is already struggling at this point with how he feels about all of this, thinking he has ruined Edward's life, destroyed the man he was, and it's made even more intense when Edward suggests they run away together to China, and change their names.

He never gets the chance to express those fears, because the night they are to escape, Chauncey gets to Stede first, drunk, and kidnaps him into the woods. He eviscerates Stede emotionally, calling him a plague and a monster, a defiler of beautiful things, among other terrible things, all while pointing a pistol at him. Stede agrees, and would have died had Chauncey not tripped in his drunken stupor and blown his own brains out. The horror of this entire event causes Stede to completely disassociate, and instead of running away with Edward, he returns to Mary and the children at home.

He learns that the family has thrived without him, and that he doesn't belong anymore, and he becomes increasingly miserable and sullen, withdrawn, jealous of Mary finding happiness with a nice man while he has given up his own chances at the same happiness with Edward. Mary eventually is fed up and attempts to kill him, but he catches her, and they end up sitting and talking things through. They finally understand one another after all this time, and Stede asks her what it's like to be in love. As Mary describes to Stede what it is like to love Doug, her new partner, Stede has the realization this is what he has felt for Ed, all this time. This conversation is deeply important to him; it helps him accept himself, come to a new understanding about himself, and gives him direction and purpose in his life once more.

Mary assists him in faking his death in dramatic fashion, and it is at this point that he leaves Barbados for the last time, in a dinghy, to find Edward and his crew.

Stede's general temperment is pleasant and upbeat, almost to a cringe sort of level at times. He can be naive but is always earnest and eager to learn, and has a bitchy streak within him miles wide. He has a public facing sort of persona that most of the world sees, which is his bold and self-confident self, and the inner self, which is deeply lonely, and for most of his life, self-conscious and desperate for love that he never had known. He represses much of his darker emotions out of necessity, but after Season 1, he begins to be much more open and confident in expressing his feelings without so much fear. He's educated and intelligent, and can go between impatience and patience very easily. Passive aggression comes naturally to him, but he has never looked down on his crew for their different social statuses, or their knowledge - he always tries to bolster them and support them without judgement.

Path to Redemption: Stede will need to make peace with himself and who he is, and the things he has done to the people he loves. It happens very fast in the show - it is a comedy - but I think it would take more time and soul-searching than a show has time for. He has to accept that he did hurt his family, and he did hurt Edward, and he has to accept that he was also badly hurt by people who should have taken care of him. He has to make things right with Edward, whatever that may end up looking like, and figure out a way to move forward that is good and healthy. Stede will respond to being on the Barge at first with novelty - he will be utterly fascinated and try to learn what he can about his new environs. However, he may not take so kindly to being a prisoner of sorts, despite having agreed to such a contract. Stede would respond well to a people positive wardening style, and respond very badly to a toxic or negative, bullying style approach. The most displeased he is, the more likely he is to plot ways to gain the upper hand, escape, or other similar tactics with like minds. The best way for a warden to get through to him is to just talk with him about it, respectfully and openly. Encouragement and positive reinforcement is key.

Sample Network Entry:
[There is a sort of shuffling sound as Stede fumbles with the network communicator - he's about three hundred years behind the times when it comes to smartphones and the like, but he's marveling at it, murmuring to himself as he tries not to drop it.]

Oh! There, I think I've got it - no? Damn. Ah! One second while I just...

[There's a little more shuffling before the view comes into focus, and is a somewhat jaunty, crooked shot of a smaller version of the Captain's cabin he'd had on the Revenge - much smaller, more intimate, but it's in the style of a fine 18th century sailing ship, wooden panels and the like, a bed in a nook and everything. It lacks much of the luxuries he would have had aboard his own ship, but he's smiling a little bit, nevertheless, pleased with his success.]

There! Perfect! [He gestures with a bit of confidence, but there's something about it that seems a bit - off. The good humor doesn't entirely reach his eyes.] So - this is a portable communicator! I can't believe this little box can project moving images onto this Network; it's really amazing what the technology on this ship can do. It's certainly nothing like the ships I'm used to, but there's nothing wrong with new experiences either! I'm Stede, and I really am looking forward to meeting all of you here on this uh, this Barge, despite the circumstances we find ourselves in. [Stede takes a seat and sits for a moment, looking around his cabin. He's still visibly a bit off, like he's not quite sold on the state of things, but he's trying very hard to convince himself that things are fine.]

I do have a lot of questions about how things work around here. I'm eager to learn, to get my hands dirty.
